How Tech is transforming the workplace

You may have heard the term ‘digital workplace’ as the concept has become more and more prominent, we are all facing some vast changes in the office space. This concept is especially relevant to any business with remote workers, frontline employees, operations from multiple locations or any need for online collaboration at all. Sound like somewhere you work? I’m not surprised!

Digital workplace technologies are now heavily integrated with the physical world as we know it, and below are the top 5 technologies you should already be familiar with.

  1. Security

Long gone are the days where documents were safely kept in a physical safe. Nowadays data is being stored on dongles, hard-drive or other encrypted devices, protecting key information so that it is not misused. With the recent introduction of GDPR – assuring data is only used for its intended purposes, keeping data safe (especially client personal data) has never been more important. This also includes using secure messaging applications to communicate, assuring no regulation violations occur.

  1. The Cloud

You would have definitely heard this term if you’ve been anywhere near a computer in the last 10 years! Cloud computing involves access and storage of information over the internet instead of files and data being stored locally. This works in-tune with heightened security as files are more difficult to access when behind a protective wall. However, with users accessing their cloud services with their own personal devices, theft leaves user / company data at potential risk.

  1. Smart Phone apps

A series of apps have been released which act as ‘virtual assistants’, strengthening workforce management and increases productivity. Microsoft have released a series of tools under their ‘Dynamics 365’ product, which very much like Google Docs enable the end user to access all relevant files and make edits on the go – But not just that, you can also create task lists and deadlines to assure you’re meeting your working requirements.

  1. Team Technology

Along with the likes of the Smart Phone apps above, communicating has never been easier, video calls to the tune of Skype’s capabilities have now been integrated with a series of online tools to help better cross-collaborate. Unified Communications (UC) is a term often used when referring to the practise of bringing together multiple mediums of conversation into a single platform (instant messaging, emailing, video chats, conference calls etc.)

  1. Analytics

Most organizations can now access a huge range of data relating to employee attendance, performance, productivity, behavioural responses and other key factors. These insights can almost determine an individual’s return on investment (ROI), identify opportunities to restructure / rewire departments and most importantly award and merit employees outperforming their peers.

As we scratch the surface of what should be common knowledge in steps to transform the workplace, it is important to know that with each problem comes a solution – and modern problems require modern solutions.
